Buckingham Road Bed, N22
This rain-garden bed was made by Haringey Council to divert run-off from the broad tarmac road. No further care was given, the rain ran round the outside and the original drought tolerant planting struggled in the scant compost. As self-appointed gardener, I began weeding and editing to help the plants along. The balance of cultivated perennials and self-seeding wild annuals is as reliant on the shifting weather patterns. Perovskia and sedum thrive, as do the self-seeders, Centranthus ruber Albus, wild rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia) and Sun Spurge (Euphorbia helioscopia). All share a dependable beauty to fill this bed to bursting.
